intervention. thank you for joining us. i'm a dion lim to will be federal government step in to help clean up san francisco street? that is exactly what mayor london is requesting. it happens as san francisco's police department is struggling with understaffing. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is live with who exactly the mayor is now calling on for help. cornell? cornell: hey, dion. the mayor is calling on the feds. she is reaching out to the u.s. attorney to help with the city's drug crisis here in the streets. mayor breed: my hope is that we will be able to partner and work together on trying to address the issues. cornell: mayor london breed admits san francisco needs help to slow drug dealing happening everyday on the streets. breed wrote a letter to the newly appointed u.s. attorney for california, ishmael ramsey, saying the problem is beyond the city's control. mayor breed: we definitely need help, not only are

police departments shortstaffed, but the arrests and the whole process that goes into that, to meet the challenges has been difficult. mayor breed: breed -- cornell: breed says the city needs help to both arrest and prosecute drug dealers, and a time when the fentanyl-driven overdose epidemic has brought open air drug dealing to a new level. the san francisco department of public health tweeted its street teams responded to more than 2200 91 one calls last year, treating overdoses and providing metal -- medical, mental health, and medication for addiction. bree declared an emergency, using city resources to crackdown on drug dealing. mayor breed: all the various pieces we need to make that as effective as i know it could have been were not necessarily there, but i know i am optimistic about the future. cornell: district attorney brooke jenkins says federal assistance is welcome.

jenkins says no single agency or department is able to tackle the crisis of drug dealing and the impact it is having in and on our communities alone. >> it is a public health calamity we have not seen as a city since the aids crisis. cornell: supervisor matt dorsey supports the mayor's plea for help. he says over the last two years, 2000 people have died from drug overdoses and san francisco. >> if we have had that many san franciscans gunned down in our streets, there is no question, the national guard would be here. cornell: often times, federal law enforcement has more resources, and federal charges can bring more consequences for drug dealers. both he and the mayor of hoping a meeting with the u.s. attorney's office can happen very soon appeared we will see what happens. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: thanks. a series of earthquakes should

parts of the bay area today. a usgs map shows quakes were centered where the star is san leandro. san mateo, fremont, san francisco, and oakland all felt the quake. the oakland zoo felt the quake that says the animals and facilities are safe and the quake felt like a gust of wind. the first quake was a magnitude 3.2 and happened about 9:20 this morning. two other 3. minutes later. you may have gotten this push alert from abc 7 news about the earthquake minutes after it happened. if not, you can download the abc 7 news app and enable notifications to get breaking news sent directly to your mobile device. a search is on for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run crash in redwood city. police responded to the scene near veterans boulevard and maple street at about 9:30 last night. that is where a vehicle hit and killed a bicyclist.

northbound lanes of veterans boulevard were shut down during the investigation. police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to give them a call. moving to the south bay, where there was a two alarm fire at a former mcdonald's. the fire ignited on north 1st street in san jose after 2:00 in the morning. firefighters were seen putting out heavy flames that were coming from the vacant building. officials said there were no injuries, and they are not sure what caused that fire. developing news now, tornadoes and dangerous storms are blamed for at least 21 deaths in the south and midwest. more than 50 tornado reports were reported in seven states, and the storm front is not over yet. abc's jack linley -- jacquel lee has a look at destruction. jacqueline: at this nail salon in little rock, arkansas, employees and patrons taking coverage in the back. >> about 20, 25 of us ran to the

back, close the door, huddled together, and prayed for our lives. jaclyn: governor sarah huckabee sanders declaring a state of emergency and visiting this fire station. gov. sanders: the fact that we have firefighters who, despite the fact that they had a tornado literally coming through their station, worried about the community. jaclyn: further east in tennessee, a journalist posting these images to social media, saying he thought he was going to die after his vehicle was picked up and tossed off the road. in belvidere, illinois, chaos inside the apollo theater. >> the roof collapse at the apollo. there were people inside. jaclyn: 260 people inside. one person did not survive. the storm so powerful, the marquis ripped off the building. the theater, more than 100 years old, was recently renovated. >> when you think about what it means to the city, we would like

to play football in advanced leagues and in high school. a rally today in tahoe to protest expansion plans by homewood mountain resorts. grassroots group keep home public says the owners of homewood want to turn the ski resort into a private ski area, requiring lifetime memberships and limiting public access. they include -- they accuse the company of a bait and switch tactic when it comes to development plans per the resort responded with a statement, saying "the department continues to conform to the approved master plans, reduced numbers of residential units will not privatize the mountain and continues to support recreational access to the mountain during all seasons." talking about seasons -- spencer: yes. dion: you said the sunny weather is going to last, but how long? will be a few clouds run, maybe a spotty sprinkle. here is live doppler 7. skies are mainly sunny all across the bay area right now. a few clouds here and there. it is breezy out there, especially near the coast, where we have wind speeds up to 18, almost 20 miles an hour in some spots, but a lovely day. it is a bit milder right now than at this time yesterday by about two to four degrees in most locations. a live view over san francisco right now, it is 57 degrees, 60 at oakland, palo alto, san 55 at half moon bay. beautiful at the golden gate. blue skies there. you see clouds way up north. that is where there may be a sprinkle or two. lows in the mid 60's at napa, fairfield, concord, and livermore. the view from mount tam looking over the bay. these are the forecast headlines, partly cloudy and dry overnight, breezy with spotty, like sprinkles tomorrow

afternoon. i'm not even going to call them showers, sprinkles. windy and cooler weather will be with us on monday and tuesday. sunday at 7:00 tonight. a few high clouds passing by overnight. it will be mainly clear. early tomorrow, we see the development of clouds in the northernmost part of our viewing area. by early to late afternoon tomorrow, there's a chance of light spotty showers or sprinkles to cloverdale, and maybe a couple of sprinkles reach down to the golden gate, but most of the bay area will be dry tomorrow. if there is measured rainfall at all, estimates call for maybe 1/100th of an inch, if anything falls at all. up in ukiah, there may be ths of an inch. highs tomorrow generally in the upper 50's, although there may be a few low 60's inland, antioch, concord, fairfield here
